THROWBACK THURSDAY (1991)

MARKY MARK & the FUNKY BUNCH

“GOOD VIBRATIONS”

I can’t tell you how many times this song was played in our basement in my parent’s house while growing up.  This was one of a few or handful of songs that I remember being played all the time and loud throughout the house.  I don’t know how my mother felt about my dad playing music that loud all the time, but it was a good thing sometimes to know that he was off in his own world.  I also remember going to cookouts, black people cookouts, and hearing this song at least once during my duration there.  I don’t think this was one of those songs that you was required to play while at a cookout or at some dance hall, but you might get looked at funny if you never played this during your time as a DJ of MC of the party.

  1. I love how music can transport you to a specific time in your life. This song takes me to Bromley Mountain of all places! I was the lift supervisor there starting in 1987 and the kids were playing Run DMC, Tone Loc, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, etc. I think Good Vibrations came out in the early 90’s and it was an instant classic! I can remember many mornings getting the lifts ready for the day and this song blaring out from somebody’s boom box. Man there was some great music being made back then and it was music like no one had ever done before, so fresh and exciting.
